The Annapolis Valley Exhibition is proud to present an exciting opportunity for youth in the Valley region. The Beckie Bruce Essay Contest is presented in memory of Rebecca “Beckie” Bruce, a daughter of local farmer John Bruce and his wife Trish, a local business owner. Beckie was a graduate of Middleton Regional High School and went on to a successful teaching career, often spending her summers working for and volunteering at the Annapolis Valley Exhibition among many other passions. Beckie passed away suddenly due to an acute illness in 2021 at the age of 29.

Students in grades 10 to 12 in the Annapolis Valley Regional Centre for Education are invited to submit an essay of 1000 to 1500 words. Essays should be related to agriculture, the Exhibition, living in an agrarian area, Suggestions for essay topics include:

  • What does the Annapolis Valley Exhibition mean to you?
  • What impact does the Annapolis Valley Exhibition have on the community?
  • What could the Exhibition do to engage more youth?
  • How have farming practices been adapted to to adjust for changes to the environment?
  • Discuss the importance of agriculture in your community.
  • What is your experience with raising livestock and/or crops? What life skills have you learned?

Entries must be submitted by May 24, 2024, with the winning essay published on the Exhibition website on May 31, 2024.

The winner of this contest will be named Valley Ex Ambassador for the 2024 season. The prize includes $500 donated by the Bruce family, a week pass to the Exhibition for the winner and one guest, and a place on the VIP stage following an appearance in the Grand Street Parade prior to the opening of the Exhibition on August 12th. The winner will also be invited to appear in other festival parades around the Annapolis Valley through the summer, based on availability.
