Starting in 1927 as the Riverside Guernsey Club Show, our Ex became known as the Annapolis County Exhibition and later the Annapolis Valley Exhibition. It began as a 1-day show, but changed to a 2-day event in 1928, adding a large tent to showcase indoor events. The first permanent building to be constructed was the Dining Hall in 1930, at a cost of $1,100. 2 large barns and a sheep shed were next to be added.
The exhibition has operated annually since it's inception, and during the 1950's and early 60's had one of the largest Guernsey Cattle shows east of the Royal Winter Fair. The event is also famous for it's excellent fruit and vegetable displays. In the late 90's, the Riverside Stage was constructed and concerts have become a major attraction.
The Annapolis Valley Exhibition is not just vital for the community, it also plays a vital role in the future and sustainability of Nova Scotia's agricultural workforce. As the youth of today see and experience the rewards of modern day farming, participate in the communities that agricultural disciplines support, and see first hand how communities and business enterprises thrive year after year, they will themselves wish to share in the profitability and pleasure of a lifestyle provided by the land.
“The Annapolis Valley Exhibition plays a crucial role in encouraging local youth to consider future careers in the various agricultural disciplines. How are you going to keep them down on the farm? By showing them that the farm is a progressive environment."
The Annapolis Valley Exhibition is becoming well-known for its fantastic musical events, held at our stunning Riverside Concert Stage. It is an amazing venue for live music and entertainment. The gentle sloping bank facing the stage creates a natural outdoor theater setting large enough to hold 8000 - 10,000 people.
Famous faces who have already performed on our stage include The Rankins, Michelle Wright, Trooper, April Wine, Doc Walker, Rita MacNeil, the Kentucky Headhunters, and Gordie Sampson, to name but a few. While many exhibitions charge visitors an additional fee for featured entertainment, at the Annapolis Valley Exhibition the charge at the gate covers it all, giving everyone access to the big names performing at the Riverside Concert Stage.
The Annapolis Valley Ex also supports and promotes those big names of tomorrow. Opening acts are offered before the main performers on our main stage, drawing from a pool of very talented local bands and entertainers.
Riverside Concert Stage isn’t the only venue on the grounds. Watch out for all the fabulous performers at the Grey Display Building. Riverside Concerts are held during the exhibition week and admission to the Exhibition will also get you to the concerts. Concerts start with an opening act at 7pm.
